Knowledge of sound business practices, as well as good work habits, are vital for a painter to have in order to function professionally, survive and prosper. Therefore, students of SARA are exposed to every aspect of being a professional painter including those business activities rarely discussed or explored in art schools such as self-promotion, gallery relationships, the use of professionals, pricing artwork and written contracts, to name a few. There are, of course, no secrets or magic tricks that guarantee success, but an understanding of the business side of being a painter will certainly improve one’s chances of success. SARA is serious about preparing students for careers as professional artists. As a practical lesson, the school places deadlines on certain projects to help students learn to use their time better and more efficiently. SARA will also occasionally organize exhibitions of student and faculty work as a means of introducing students to galleries and collectors and the experience of exhibiting in general.
